Sexism vs. Society
Throughout the book Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck displays sexism in a negative way in the early 1930s. The grapheme in the novel that people are sexist towards is cognise provided as Curleys Wife. Since Curleys wife is the only young lady on the ranch, all the men always rap on her because they see her as an object and not alone as a person. Sexism was common during that time spot, many women were handle very poorly. This novel is set in the time period of the Great Depression and many people were not prone equal rights.
Curleys wife is an outcast in the novel. If Curley of all time saw her just hanging around he would articulate her to go back to the house. Curley is always looking for his wife to practise sure she is not mouthing to the other men. You seen a girl around here?(37). Being the only girl on the ranch she witnesss mistreated by many of the men, including Curley. If she is ever doing anything wrong, Curley gets real mad and yells at her. Curleys wife is always complain about how much she does not like him. Well I aint told this to nobody before, maybe I ought to. I dont like Curley, he aint a nice fella (89).
Throughout the novel Of Mice and Men Curleys wife is stereotyped. All of the men think she is a big tramp.
She is always trying to the talk to the men. She is the only girl on the ranch, so she is going to talk to all the men. She is so lonely and Curley is always working and does not really talk to his wife. I get lonely (87). Whenever Curley catches her talking with the other men, he threatens to hurt them. When Curleys wife talks to Lennie in the bacillus right before her kills her, Steinbeck really makes a point that she is not a tramp, provided is just mistreated. You can talk to people, just I cant talk to nobody but Curley, else he gets mad. Howd you like to not talk to anybody? (87)
